Description: Edinburgh: Printed for William Gray..., 1755. FIRST EDINBURGH EDITION. 12mo (in 6s), pp. xlviii, [iii], iv - xix [xx blank], 292, contemporary calf, red morocco label, raised bands between gilt rules; bookplate crudely removed from front paste-down end-paper. A very good copy, with the late 18th century autograph "John Warren" on the recto of the front free end-paper. Mrs. Rowe (1674 - 1737) first published this work in 1729. and it was reprinted at least 70 times in the 18th century. Perhaps the most familiar image from the book is Mrs. Rowe's description of heaven as "bright cascades and crystal rivulets rolling over orient pearls and sands of gold." ESTC T84019 locates only two copies, L and E, both with the same pagination. Page [iii], the dedication to Young, is signed a2 in both the L and E copies, and the volume is not imperfect.
