Description: London: Printed [by Richard Taylor] for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme..., 1808. 12mo, pp. vi, 185 [186 printer's imprint], engraved frontispiece (by Thomson after Reynolds), contemporary calf, gilt spine; joints creased, spine nicked and rubbed. This appears to be the edition reviewed in The Gentleman's Magazine for 1808 (volume 78), introducing the "neat diminutive volume" as the production of "the relict of Opie, the late excellent painter...." However, the relict comes into her own in the last sentence: "Mrs. Opie, possessed of a mind disdaining imitation, and conscious of its own resources, has presented the Community with the means of passing a leisure hour innocently and delightfully...."
