Title: The History of Catiline's Conspiracy, and the Jugurthine War. By C. C. Sallust. With a New Translation of Cicero's Four Orations against Catiline. To which is prefixed, The Life of Sallust. By William Rose.
Description: London: Printed for D. Browne, A. Millar...[et al], 1757. 8vo, pp. xvi, 253 [254 - 256 adverts], contemporary calf, lacks label, front cover detached. With the ownership inscription on the recto of the front free end-paper, "Carolus Jennings/ Coll. Linc./ Oxon." and the bookplate "Charles Jennings Wantage" on the front paste-down end-paper. Jennings (1781 - 1830) matriculated in 1800, B. A., 1804, M. A., 1807, and died at Wantage in 1830 (Foster). This is a re-issue of the first edition of 1751, with a cancel title-page. This translation is of particular interest, as William Rose (1719 - 1786) is probably best-known for his reviews in The Monthly Review; Rose probably reviewed almost a thousand works, and was particularly distinguished for his reviews of all the major philosophical works of the period. His only other separately-published work appears to be A Letter to the Right Honourable Lord North, concerning the Intended Application to Parliament for Relief in the Matter of Subscription to the Thirty-nine Articles and Liturgy of the Church of England (1772). ESTC T93461 locates 8 copies: L; CLU, GU, IU, MeB, NcD, PPL; ZWTU. The 1751 first edition, ESTC T93462, is less common: L, O, O; KU-S.
