P. Arkwright. Charles Burney was probably the first scholar to make extensive use of the unpublished essays and notes that North (c. 1651 - 1734) had compiled during the last forty-five years of his life. John Wilson in New Grove notes that "he may also be called the first English music critic. Even if he was limited in musical experience and sometimes sketchy on fact, no English writer on music between 1650 and 1750 rivalled him in the scope of his writings, in the shrewdness of his views or in the vigour and appeal of his style."
