Title: Sketches of the Philosophy of Morals.
Description: London: Printed for Henry Colburn, and Co...., 1822 FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. xxix [xxx blank], 369 [370 blank], original boards, uncut, linen spine, paper label; spine and little faded and soiled, corners slightly worn. Morgan qualified as an M. D. in 1809 and was knighted in 1811; his wife, Lady Morgan, was the well-known author of France (1818) and Italy (1821). Morgan's topics are "Of Organization in its Relation to Morals," "Of Liberty and Necessity," "Of the Origin and Development of Moral Ideas," "Of the Physical Causes which have contributed to Moral Development," "Of the Influence of Institutions on Morality," "Of Right and Obligation." Many of Morgan's linkings of physiology and philosophy are acute, but he sometimes risks political incorrectness: "Conclusions, at which the male arrives by slow and painful exertions of thought, rise almost spontaneously in the female mind. Woman leaps at once from premises to consequences by an intuitive glance; her reasonings are indistinct, and her judgments have more in them of sensation than reflection."
