The poet James Woodhouse (bap. 1735, d. 1820) began his working life as a cordwainer or shoemaker, but his poetical work came to the attention of Shenstone, who along with Lord Lyttelton and Edward Montagu and James and Robert Dodsley supported him. After the first edition of his poems was published in 1764, he came to the attention of Samuel Johnson and the Thrales, He dined with the Thrales when Johnson was present, and that meeting apparently called forth Johnson's famous injunction, "Give nights and days, Sir ... to the study of Addison, if you mean either to be a good writer, or what is more worth, an honest man." He eventually supported himself as a bookseller.
