Title: Court Intrigues in a Collection of Original Letters, From the Island of the New Atalantis, &c. By the Author of those Memoirs.
Description: London: Printed for John Morpew...and John Woodward..., 1711. 8vo, 185 x 111, pp. [iv], 159 170-199 [i.e. 201], 100-102 [i.e. 120] pages, contemporary panelled calf, fragment of red leather label, spine giving evidence of having been burned, joints slightly cracked, top and base of spine worn, corners chipped. Delarivier Manley (c. 1670–1724), as she is styled in many texts, e. g., ONDB published her first work of scandalous fiction, the New Atalantis in 1709 and continued with several sequels, including the present text, altlhough she disclaimed as a pirated edition in a number of The Examiner on 14 June 1711. She had important literary friends, including Jonathan Swift who described her as "very generous principles for one of her sort; and a great deal of sense and invention; she is about forty, very homely, and very fat...." "Anonymous. By the author of "Secret memoirs and manners ... from the New Atalantis", i.e. Mary de la Rivière Manley.--ESTC./ Letters 1-24 were previously published, 1707, with the English translation of Marie d'Aulnoy's "Mémoires de la cour d'Angleterre" entitled "Memoirs of the court of England ... To which is added, The lady's pacquet of letters ..." The letters had separate half title, "The unknown lady's pacquet of letters" and running title "The lady's pacquet broke open." Letters 25-40 appeared, 1708, with the English translation of Marie d'Aulnoy's "Le comte de Warwick" entitled "The history of the Earl of Warwick ... To which is added, the remaining part of the unknown lady's pacquet of letters ..." Letter 41, according to the publisher (p. [2]), was never before published./ Numbers 184-185 repeated in pagination; p. 120 at end misnumbered 102. Other errors also present which do not affect count as given above.
