FIRST EDITION. 4to, 255 x 175 mms., pp. xii, 43 [44 blank], 45 - 111 engraved music [112 blank], engrave portrait frontispiece, finely bound by Morell in later full crushed olive morocco, spine with raised bands, the sides gilt decorated with 35 square design with letter 'M' in each square, inner gilt panelled dentelles, all edge gilt, a very good to fine copy, with corners slightly crushed, front joint rubbed, top of spine slightly worn. "M" can stand for the surname of the binder, for "music," "manuscript," inter alia. The work is dedicated to John Payne Collier (1789–1883) and has 119 songs from Percy's Reliques of Ancient English Poetry (1765). Edward Francis Rimbault (1816- 1876), like Percy, was one of the 19th century's most enterprising student of early English folk music, dance music, popular ballads, etc. He was secretary of the Percy Society from 1840 to 1843, and as Arthur Freeman and Janet Ing Freeeman write in John Payne Collier: Scholarship and Forgery in the Nineteenth Century (Yale University Pres, 2004), "much of his early interaction with Collier concerned society business, especially difficulties with 'indecent' text, an on going problem for editors of early squibs.... [In 1850] Rimbault had dedicated his Musical Illustrations of Bishop Percy's Reliques to Collier, 'whose knowledge of ancient poetry and ballad literature is only equalled by his willingness to impart it to others...."
