FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION. 8vo, 194 x 120 mms., pp. xv, 391 [392 adverts], including list of subscriber, engraved frontispiece, title-page in red and black, later 18th century panelled calf, spine ornately gilt in compartments, red leather label; front joint amateurishly repaired Giovanni Battista Comazzi (1654 - 1711) published La morale dei principi osservata nell'istoria di tutti gl'imperadori, che regnarono in Roma in 1689. He was an Italian diplomat and court historian to the Hapsburg ruler Ferdinand III in Vienna, though he would later fall out of favour. The translator, William Hatchett (1701 – 1760s), was the parnter of Eliza Haywood (1693 – 1756), and was best-known for his translations of substantial French works: Jean-Paul Bignon's Les aventures d'Abdalla, fils d'Hanif (The Adventures of Abdalla, Son of Hanif) (1728), Anne-Thérèse de Marguenat de Courcelles, Marquise de Lambert's Avis d'une mere à son fils et à sa fille (Advice from a mother to her son and daughter) (1728), and the present work. Haywood subscribed for two copies of this volume.
