Author: SCHUBERT (Franz). VON HELLBORN (Kreissle): Title: The Life of Franz Schubert. Translated from the German of Kreissle von Hellborn by Arthur Duke Coleridge Late Fellow of King's College, Cambridge. With an Appendix by George Grove, Esq.
Description: London: Longmans, Green, and Co..., 1869. FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION. 2 volumes. 8vo, 188 x 110 mms., pp. xii, 318; viii, 336 [337 errata, 338 blank], portrait frontispiece in volume, music examples in texts, attractively bound in contemporary half calf, spines gilt decorated with raised bands and olive green labels, a little rubbed but quite sound and clean. A very agreeable set. Heinrich Kreissle von Hellborn (1806 - 1869) was a close friend to Schubert and his family. This biography was first published in German in 1865. Grove's appendix is a thematic catalogue of the nine symphonies, mentioning other works still in MS. Schubert's sexual orientation became a topic of interest in 1989 when musicologist Maynard Solomon suggested that Schubert was erotically attracted to men, an as that has been heatedly debated, but the notion can be traced to various comments mad by von Hellborn.
