Ex officina Rob[erti] Stephani typographi regij, 1544. 8vo, 166 x 101 mms., pp. 513 [514 blank, but pages 353-368, and 435-449 repeated in numbering; page 401 lacking in numbering; page 201 incorrectly numbered 20], woodcut vignette of Estienne Press on title-page], colophon reads "Excudebat Rob. Stephanus typographus Parisijs, Ann. M. DXLIIII. XVI," slightly soiled contemporary vellum, early inscriptions on title-page, 19th century bookplate on front paste-down end-paper. A good copy. Ammianus Marcellinus (c. 330 - 400) who wrote the penultimate major historical account surviving from antiquity (preceding Procopius) of Rome: "Written in Latin and known as the Res gestae, his work chronicled the history of Rome from the accession of the Emperor Nerva in 96 to the death of Valens at the Battle of Adrianople in 378. Only the sections covering the period 353 to 378 survive" Adams; A972. This is a reprint of this 1543 edition, which in turn is from the Basil, Johan Froben edition of 1533, with book xxxi added.
