In his preface, Fletcher, who gives his address as Clare Hall, Cambridge, records that "The basis of truth on whidh superstructure of fiction in the larger poem [Chozar and Sela] is founded, may be seen i Gibbon, and Ockley's History of the Saracens...." It would appear that Fletcher wrote these poems while, or even before, he was a student at Clare Hall, as he concludes the preface: "The good opinion of those who may be inclined to think favourably of the present production, might be heightened, perhaps, if the work were premature: this, however is a plea the author cannot make; but if any of my readers will think the better of it for having been written before my eighteenth year, I will leave my cause in their charitable hands."
