The otologist John Harrison Curtis (1783/4–1852) published in 1817 his first book Treatise on the Physiology and Diseases of the Ear, which ran to four editions. He was entirely self-taught and probably was a bit of a quack, but he published several medical books, and the first edition of this one on the ear appeared in 1833,
