Description: London, Printed for the Author and sold by J. Murray, 1785. 3 volumes. 12mo, 173 x 100 mms., pp. [iv], 212; [iv], 191 [192 blank], [iv], 207 [208 Errata], including half-title in volumes 2 and 3, contemporary half calf, marbled boards (rubbed), red and green leather labels, ms. note in a contemporary hand tipped in between pages 110 and 111 in volume 2; title-page and following leaf defective, lacking one third of text, leaves H2 to H5 defective at lower margins with slight loss of text, offered for sale with all faults. The Clergyman and author John Trusler (1735 - 1820) also pursued other occupations, including training as a physician, and opening a school for encouraging authors. The Critical Review noted that, "We think that our author has acted injudiciously in obtruding this excellent work [Gill Blas] on our notice, and, by that means suggesting a comparison very unfavourable to his own.... Many of the characters introduced into these volumes are drawn with spirit, and preserved with consistency.... The author is generallly in a good humour himself, except where he speaks of booksellers or rviewers...."
