Description: Dublin: Printed for G. and A. Ewing..., 1759. FIRST DUBLIN EDITION. 12mo, 170 x 100 mms., pp. xii, 276, rather shabby contemporary calf, rubbed and worn, but with covers firmly attached; front and rear blank leaves with childish scribbles, first front free end-paper detached; a so-so, but usable copy. The physician James Mackenzie (1682?–1761) studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, and this is his best-known book. It was first published in Edinburgh in 1758. He was a friend of Lady Mary Worthley Montagu, and the third edition of 1760 included an appendix on the treatment of smallpox. Among many activities that Mackenzie endorses as good for one's health is golf.
