Title: Travels Through the Southern Provinces of the Russian Empire, Performed in the Years 1793 and 1794, Vol. III
Description: London, James Ridgway. 1803, New Edition. Hardcover, 18mo, 3.75" x 6". Book, By P. S. Pallas, Councillor of State to the Emperor of all the Russias, etc; translated from the German, without abridgment, by Francis Blagdon, Esq. Vol. 3 only, chapters 17 to 25. Vol. 7 of Modern Discoveries, or a Collection of Facts and Observations, principally relative to the various branches of natural history, resulting from the geological, topographical, botanical, physiological, mineralogical and philosophical researches of Celebrated Modern Travellers, in every quarter of the globe. This volume seems to cover the Crimea. It is said to be embellished with many plates; in fact there is only one, and if others have been removed, it is without leaving any evidence. There is no list of plates, but the only other copy I've come across also has the same one plate, so I'm assuming it was published like that. The plate is not coloured. The leather binding is in a bad state, charred on the spine, and the front cover and flyleaf detached. On the rear free endpaper and a blank page at the back notes and doodles have been executed, more recently than the book's publication, fairly neatly. Otherwise the body of the book is in very good condition. Published the year after the first edition, but obviously a much cheaper effort. The plate is numbered 13 and shows a bearded man with a gun and a woman in trousers and a long robe. Fairly Good/No Jacket.
