Freya Stark (1893-1993) was a British-Italian explorer and author, who spent much of her time travelling in the Arabian peninsula. She undertook a multi-year expedition to the Hadramout region of southern Arabia, hoping to travel along the frankincense and spice trading routes of the mountain hinterlands, as well as searching for the ancient city of Shabwa, the fabled capital city of the biblical Queen of Sheba. Despite never finding the lost city, she wrote several books on her travels in the region including
Winter in Arabia, her last work on this expedition..
