James David Macdonald (1908-2002) was a Scottish-Australian ornithologist and ornithological writer. He worked in the bird section of the British Museum (Natural History) from 1935 until his retirement in 1968, when he had attained the position of Senior Scientific Officer and Deputy Keeper of Zoology. He participated in expeditions to Sudan, South and South-west Africa, and led the first Harold Hall Expedition to collect bird specimens in Australia (1962-1963), adding significantly to the collections of African and Australian birds held by the British Museum. Through books such as this he also helped popularise ornithology..
