This first true survey of Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota was conducted under the leadership of the pioneering geologist David Dale Owen (1807-1860). Born in New Lanark, Scotland, he was the son of Robert Owen, the famous philanthropist and progressive mill owner. On his death an obituary in Scientific American described him as ‘One of the most eminent men of science in America’.Often found bound in two volumes, this is complete in one. This remarkable work is extensively illustrated with fine wood-cuts, two copper engraved maps (one large Geological map, one quarto), 36 steel engravings (including 27 quarto plates of organic remains) and nine lithographic geological sections..
