Text French. Henri Martin (1810-1883 ) was a French historian who devoted much of his life to the study of the history of France. Writing the monumental Histoire de France, which was first published in 15 volumes (1833-1836). This covered the early history of France upto the French Revolution of 1789. In this fourth edition (1858-61) Martin extended the coverage of the work, which was published in 16 volumes, plus a Table Analytique (Index), (1861-65). In 1869 he received a prize of 20,000 francs from the Institut de France for this important publication..
