Foreword of the first volume states that the '800 entries comprise about 1500 individual works which were written wholly or in part before the year 1650, the oldest being an Anglo-Saxon manuscript from about 1025A.D.' The second and third volume describes more than 4,000 manuscripts written after 1650, it includes a number of indexes and an Appendix providing an index of autograph letters..
