Arran a Poem ... And Excursions to Arran ... (1847), but with the Poem omitted, together with an additional 'Second Series'. The eccentric order of the sections is explained by the author in the Advertisement (p. v) as follows, 'When originally published, about a hundred pages at the beginning of the volume contained "Arran, a Poem". The publisher found that the union of poetry and prose was disadvantageous to both; and having disjoined them, he asked the Author to furnish prose equal in amount to the dissociated poetry. The quantity furnished proving more than sufficient to fill up the blank space at the beginning, it was appended to the end of the volume, forming Parts III and IV.'Mullens & Swann, p. 338; Ballance
