Sir William Henry Flower, (1831-1899), made valuable contributions to structural anthropology and the comparative anatomy of mammals. In 1884 he succeeded Sir Richard Owen as director of the British Museum (Natural History), where he revolutionized the design of museum display. This book is considered one of his most important works, as a contemporary review published in Science September 1898 stated ‘his words have additional value from the fact that he was practically the first to recognise the duties of a museum to the public and the important educational role it should be made to play’..
