Title: Report on the Invertebrata of Massachusetts. Comprising the Mollusca

A very fine copy.. 2nd edition edited by W.G. Binney. Augustus Addison Gould (1805-1866), published his Report on the Invertebrata of Massachusetts (1841). This was the first monograph published in the United Statesthat attempted to describe the entire molluskan fauna of a geographical region (Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography). Gould died before he could publish a revised edition, which was completed posthumously by William G. Binney (1833-1909). As the copperplates used to illustrate the original edition were no longer available, new drawings were undertaken based on the collections at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Cambridge, Massachusetts and the Peabody Academy at Salam. The text figures of specimens were drawn on wood by E.S. Morse and engraved by Henry Marsh who was “well known for his beautiful illustrations of Harris’s Insects”. The fine chromo-lithographic plates were based on drawings of the nudibranchiata by Gould, together with other drawings by Prof. Louis Agassiz. The numbering of the text figures and plates are continuous with the first edition..
