Encyclopaedia Britannica had been overlooked by leading naturalists of the day such as A.S. Packard and G.H. Carpenter, stating 'I hope that in their present form these articles will not fail to come under the notice of zoologists'. The Appendix includes information not published in the
Encyclopaedia Britannica.
