Sandford, Shrewsbury, double-ruled gilt borders, spine with raised bands, gilt tooling to compartments and leather title pieces, marbled endpapers and edges. A few minor scuff marks. A fine clean set.. First edition, mixed early reissues (except for Vol. VI (Birds), which is the first issue of 1857). Reissues commenced before completion of the first edition. Early issues are much superior in colouring to the later editions. Plates are finely hand-coloured, or partly colour printed (eggs). These popular works on British Birds (6 vols), and their Nests and Eggs (3 vols) each went through several editions. The wood-blocks for the plates were engraved and printed by Benjamin Fawcett, Driffield. Francis Orpen Morris (1810-1893) was a clergyman and naturalist.
