The published section deals with the Limicolae (plovers and sandpipers). The work is renowned for its beautiful chromolithographs (printed by Wilhelm Greve, Berlin), chiefly made from originals designed by the author. The eggs of some American species which occur as visitors to Britain were drawn by J.L. Ridgway; a few plates and figures were executed from drawings by M. Horman-Fisher.
