Some offsetting from plates onto facing caption leaves. Armorial bookplate of Hanbury Barclay, with his heraldic emblems also in gilt to spines. A handsomely bound set.. 2nd edition. Originally published in 16 parts 1846-1847. Many of the illustrations for the plates were drawn from nature by Mrs. Catharine Johnston, the author's wife. Plates are numbered I-LXXIV; XXXIV* (LXIV + LXV not published). A portrait of the author is found as a frontispiece in some copies sold after 1857, but is not found in the original part issues or early consolidated copies such as this one. (Williams, R.B. (2018)
