Asa Fitch (1809-1879) is considered one of America’s greatest entomologists. In 1854 he was appointed Entomologist of the New York State Agricultural Society, thereby becoming the first salaried, professional entomologist in the United States. In this position Fitch helped define the role of the professional entomologist. His 14 annual reports, 'On the Noxious, Beneficial and Other Insects, of The State Of New York' published in the Transactions of the New York State Agricultural Society, were highly regarded and became standard reading for entomologists and agriculturists worldwide. The reports, were the first series of this kind published in the United States, and became models for later entomologists (Jeffrey K. Barnes, 1988, Asa Fitch, and the emergence of American Entomology)..
