The Red Army and the Red Navy fought the Germans all through the Crimean peninsula, even though their cause was hopeless. When it came to Sevastopol, the defenders fought the invaders house by house right down to the dock. The wounded were evacuated across the Black Sea, but able-bodied defenders had to fight to the death to cover the retreat. The city was lost. The German Eleventh Army was awarded the Crimean Shield, but it was a Pyrrhic victory because the army was so decimated that it never fought another battle. Sevastopol was named a Hero City, and General Petrov escaped by submarine and was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and a Distinguished Service Cross by the US government.. Very Good .
