Written by the prolific Belgian art historian Paul Lambotte, one time Director of the Museum of Fine Art, Brussels. Hans Memling (aka Hans Memlinc; c. 1430 – 494) was a German-born painter who moved to Flanders; working in the tradition of Early Netherlandish painting. Worked in the studio of Rogier van der Weyden. After van der Weyden's death in 1464, Memling was made a citizen of Bruges; he was a renowned painter of religious themes as well as portraits..
