Cover is blue with light bumping, edge wear; rubbing/fraying at top and bottom of spine, sunning, but very clean and nice. Gold lettering on the spine. DJ is parchment colored with black lettering on front and spine; some edge wear and bumping; also some light chipping across top, with 1"x 1 1/2" patch at top of back corner missing, but top and bottom of DJ was lined with brown paper, which fills the hole. Some rubbing on spine; both flaps are triimmed a little. The DJ is very clean overall, everything legible and intact. Pages are gilt edged, with sides and bottom pretty well rubbed; top intact. Illustrated with 25 paintings, one, "The Marriage of the Arnolfini, " the frontispiece, in color, the rest in b/w. Pages are very clean and tight, deckled edges, of a high quality, linen type paper, with the date written in pencil at the bottom of the front end paper; in a Brodart cover. The publisher, The Medici Society, "exists to publish the finest colour facsimile reproductions of great paintings..." "...opens her book with a lucid account of the origin of Medieval Painters, north and south of the Alps; she traces from the great classic period the evolution of art to the early Italian Renaissance and thence north of the Alps to Germany and the Netherlands. An account of the Guilds and their influence is well and clearly put. " A very high quality, classy book on the Early Northern Painters of the National Gallery of London.
