During his lifetime his style evolved from the impressionism of his peers to his own, singularly symbolic, rich and savagely acute style. He witnessed both World Wars, and his paintings reflect this, both as a victim and as a witness; during WWI he volunteered as a medical orderly, seeing the bloody horrors of war at first hand. Lackner, a friend and patron of Beckmann's, chose these 71 works from 835 oil paintings, drawings, prints and watercolors, to chronicle and represent Beckmann's life, from his early days, through the ever changing path of his life, up until his death in the US in the mid-20th century.
