Philologe, übersetzte zahlreiche ältere u. neuere skandinavische Texte, u. a. Werke von Esaias Tegnér, die altisländische Färingersaga u. die Heimskringla. Er gilt als einer der Begründer der Skandinavistik (vgl. Brennecke, Tegnér in Deutschland)
