'The Phoenix Gallery in Brighton is displaying a selection of mixed-media art that harks back to the golden days of the 1950s and 60s. The work of four artists is on display with themes including ballroom dancing, vintage comic books, pulp novels and music fanzines. The work of veteran artist and experimental filmmaker Jeff Keen fronts the exhibition. Keen, who calls himself Mr Soft Eliminator has spent the last 46 years creating an abundance of exciting visual images using film, paint, collage, photographs, plastic toys and other collected bric-a-brac. Keen’s frantic short films display a mixture of influences ranging from silent film and melodrama to surrealist film and budget B-movies. A variety of techniques are used including painstaking stop-frame animation and reusing the same length of film to create a double image. Although Keen’s films don’t follow a traditional narrative there are some clear comic book heroes and villains to be found. White Dust features Silverhead as the bizarre male protagonist and a femme fatal in the form of the sultry Vulvana.' © Stephen Drennan.
