Author: WALLACE, ALFRED RUSSELL.
Title: The Malay Archipelago: The Land of the Orang-utan and the Bird of Paradise - A Narrative of Travel with Studies of Man and Nature.
Description: London: Macmillan, 1894. Tenth edition. Pp. xvii, 515; frontispiece woodcut of an orang-utan attacked by Dyars, 10 maps, (2 maps are colored and several are folding), 51 text-figures (most from woodcuts). Publisher's original forest green cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and with 3 gilt panel lines at the top and bottom of spine, front and rear covers with some borders ruled in blind, sm 8vo. This tenth edition, first published in 1890, contains all of Wallace's subsequent revisions to the text. In this final edition, Wallace was able to incorporate the latest views of other researchers who traveled through Island Southeast Asia (as it is now called). Wallace included many footnotes in this tenth edition which include reference to the latest discoveries. There is an old bookplate of the Free Public Library in Litchfield, New Hampshire on the front pastedown and a piece of brown paper with no markings on the facing endpaper, the spine has a very faint tiny number in black that is barely visible; the volume shows little to no use. Light foxing to the half-title page, the frontispiece plate and tissue guard and to the title page; overall, this is a very bright and clean copy in near fine condition..
