Description: New York: D. Appleton, 1897. Authorized edition. Pp. x, 592; 196 text woodcuts. Publisher's one-half red morocco leather, spine lettered in gilt, over marbled boards, top page edge in gilt, 8vo. Freeman 1334. According to Freeman, this was one of the 'specialist books' published by Darwin - it is more technical than many of his other titles, thus fewer copies were printed. Bookplate of Reading Public Museum on the front endpaper and white call number on the spine, no other library marks and almost no signs of use. The spine is coated with a preservative which has left it very bright, faint scratch on the spine, small spot on rear cover, the text block is bright with no signs of use; a tight, near fine copy..
