Author: Christopher Duffy Title: Eagles over the Alps. Suvorov in Italy and Switzerland, 1799. Original artwork by Bill Younghusband.
Description: Chicago 1999.HB with dust jacket 278 pages.British military historian once more shows his absolute mastery. The 1799 campaign was one more attempt, by a combination of Austrian and Russian forces, to contain and roll back the expanding French revolution. A campaign of two interesting “almosts”: almost it was not Suvorov who received command of the campaign, but Prince Frederick of Orange, younger brother of the later King William I of The Netherlands; however, the Prince suffered a very untimely death. Also, the campaign almost pitted against each other the two greatest war lords of the era, Suvorov and Napoleon; they missed each other by a hair’s breadth. Duffy, adamant and very British: “We declare outright that Suvorov would have beaten Bonaparte in 1800, and can only regret that he never had the opportunity.”
