Title: Le Duc de Richelieu en Russie
Description: Extrait du Correspondant. Paris Jules Gervais 1882. Small 4to., rebound in red cloth, 44 pages., Stamped on half-title page: “From the library of Le Duc De Richelieu 1875-1952”.It is said that Peter the Great when in Paris at the tomb of the Cardinal De Richelieu exclaimed that he would have given him half of his estates in order to learn from him how to rule the other half. In what is now Ukraine the Duke of Richelieu (1766-1822), distant relative of the Cardinal, to a certain extent realized the Tsar’s ardent wish. Having been appointed governor of the infant and languishing town called Odessa, he after a few years left a blossoming city and community, soon to become the fourth city of the Russian Empire and the envy of Europe. Present-day Odesa, it seems, still mourns his departure, and has every reason to. (code N-44)
