Description: ploen 1793, 284 pp., not ill., rebound, Scion of a large and old noble family of many military men, the Schmettaus, and therefore quite surprisingly, Woldemar Friederich decided to defend the French revolution and to attack the existence of standing armies. He thus naturally caused unhappiness at the Danish royal court, as well as in the Danish officer corps; especially since he expressed himself in a very uncompromising way. Answering one of his critics he wrote (p. 147): “Diese letzte Erklärung, so wie das ganze Buch, konnte nur ein Schurke schreiben.” Polemics and court procedure inevitably followed, ending, for him at least, with his death in 1794. His death may have spared him the bitter irony, that from the French Revolution would follow the biggest standing armies so far in European history. (code N-44)
