BEARD, Charles A., and BEARD, Mary R. - America in Midpassage

Title: America in Midpassage
Description: New York, The Macmillan Company, 1939. Hardcover. Drawings by Wilfred Jones. Complete 2-volume set in slipcase. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering, slipcase with paper spine label. 977pp. Small chapter opening wood engravings. Near fine/very good. Early (not first) printing, tight and handsome. Lovely pair of this continuation of their 1927 "The Rise of American Civilization" set. This pair bears choice, relevant autograph additions: Tipped in back to back at inner flyleaves of first volume are Typed Notes Signed from Charles A. Beard and Mary R. Beard. His is 1p, 8½" X 5½", New Milford, CT, 3 June n.y. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93), future notable Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Very good. Two faint original folds (not weakened). "Many thanks for your kind letter about Midpassage. To find that readers have taken delight in their work is one of the chief rewards that come to authors.." Boldly signed in black ink. Hers is also 1p, 7¼" X 5½", New Milford, CT, 9 August 1939. Same recipient. Near fine. Cordial thanks for 63rd birthday wishes: "Birthday surprises for me have never equalled those of this year 1939. Your marvelous tribute is exceptional to the height of perfection and what is more: it will last through all my years. I don't know how you managed to remember me this way. I am deeply grateful and stimulated.." Boldly signed in full in black ink. Makes you wonder what Gates wrote to her! Charles A. Beard (1874-1948) and Mary Beard (1876-1958) were household-name famous husband-and-wife historians in the early 20th century, once highly influential proponents of the progressive school of historical interpretation that has fallen out of favor. Their impact is nevertheless profound, and his 1913 "Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States" caused lasting debate. .
