(BOOK OF HOURS) - Vellum Leaf from Printed Book of Hours

Title: Vellum Leaf from Printed Book of Hours
Description: N.p. N.p. n.y. Single vellum leaf, 4½" X 7¼". Printed 21-line text (recto and verso) within large decorative/pictorial border. Very good. Mildly age toned, with tiny staple hole at each corner. Philippe Pigouchet was a French engraver and printer (1488-1518) and for almost two decades worked closely with printer Simon Vostre in Paris to create many Books of Hours for European customers. This boldly printed leaf features on each side floral and mythical creatures border at top and on one side, while the larger bottom and other side borders each feature a skeletal figure together with a female figure, likely from a Dance of Death cycle. The Latin text within features hand-lettered rubricated capital letters in red or blue with gold letters -- ten on one side, twelve on the other. Lower edge of recto bears miniscule pencilled note suggesting a date of 1502 while lower edge of verso bears faint "Slater Memorial Museum / Norwich, Conn." inkstamp. Quite attractive. .
