Author: COLLINS, John A. (1824-50) Title: Pamphlet Signed
Description: This Ohio-born attorney was considered by the famed attorney and Congressman Sergeant Smith Prentiss (1808-50), considered the most remarkable orator of his day, a brilliant lawyer and he penned an essay about him upon his death in New Orleans at age 26. Printed pamphlet, "Supreme Court. Justin A. Edwards, Appellant Vs. James H. M'Fall, Appellee," 8vo, 5pp. Self-cover. Very good. A bit age toned and edgeworn, with lower outer corner rounded and small stain at bottom of gutter. Collins' youngest brother, Charles Henry Collins (1832-1904), pens a note across the top of the first page: "This is a Law Brief of / my brother John A / Collins (who died in New Orleans La June 1850) un- / der the Civil Law of La." Apparently this several page summation of the Edwards vs. M'Fall involving an unpaid promissory note was written by the young Collins, who at its close pens "J.A. Collins / Att'y." On the blank verso, brother Charles pens a large explanatory note: "John A Collins / was but 26 years / old at his death / which occurred / in New Orleans / La in June 1850 / S.S. Prentiss wrote / a handsome obit- / uary notice. Mr. Prentiss / died very shortly afterwards / in the same year. / My brother is mentioned / in the life of Prentiss / also in History of / Kentucky and in / many speeches and / publications. He / was born in Hills- / born Ohio Ap 13th / 1824. / CHC." The "life of Prentiss" referred to is Joseph D. Shields' "The life and times of Seargent Smith Prentiss" (Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co. 1884), in which it is mentioned on page 420 "He was saddened.. by the premature death of young Collins, a brilliant lawyer of Providence, Louisiana, to whose memory he paid a glowing tribute." An interesting oddity. .
