Author: KLEIN, Julius (1901-84) Title: Typed Letter Signed
Description: This fascinating if bizarre and little-known Judaica figure led an incredibly varied career: A young war correspondent in Germany during World War One, he was interned but escaped to become a spy; he then became a crime reporter in Chicago and began the first German-language radio broadcasts in the U.S. and founded the South Pacific edition of "The Stars and Stripes" military newspaper; from 1934-39 he worked in films as special assistant to Universal Pictures president Carl Laemmle and pursued a career as screenwriter, though his script "Black Cargo" was never produced; he served in the South Pacific during world War Two, handling public relations for Generals Douglas MacArthur and Robert Richardson, and in 1948 was named National Commander of the Jewish War Veterans; in between these and other gigs he ran for Congress in 1932 and the Senate in 1954, losing both times. TLS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Universal City, CA, 3 December 1934. Addressed to Samuel Insull. Very good. Lightly age toned. On "Universal Pictures Corporation" letterhead, the brand-new "Assistant to Mr. Carl Laemmle" writes the disgraced utility company magnate (1859-1938), who had fled to France and then Greece when his companies failed but had been arrested and extradited to the U.S. to face criminal charges. Shortly before writing to Klein, Insull had been found not guilty of fraud charged, and Insull writes him at the Seneca Hotel where he had taken up residence. In part: "If you will send a letter of introduction to the young man and ask him to telephone me for an appointment, I shall be very happy to meet him. I shall try to do all I can on his behalf, but as you probably know, conditions out here in California are not much different than in most parts of the country, as far as jobs are concerned. However, I will see what can be done.." Boldly signed. .
