Author: GORDON, William Washington (1796-1842) Title: Partly-Printed Document (Unsigned)
Description: The first Georgia to graduate from West Point, this notable Savannah politician and attorney served as state representative and senator; he served Savannah as legal advisor (1822-24) and later as mayor (1834-36); he also served as first president of the Central Railroad and Canal Company of Georgia, Gordon County in northwest Georgia is named in his honor. Partly-Printed Document (unsigned), 1p, 7½" X 6½", Savannah, GA, 5 January 1822. Very good. Some edgewear and a few discreet archival mends on verso, but overall bright and attractive. Collection notice issued by the brand-new Savannah legal advisor in his role as notary public, recording that a 60-day note made on 5 November 1821 in the amount of $812.43 "is now in my hands for Protest, for non-payment, and if it be not paid before 10 o'clock tomorrow, it will be returned.. to the Planters Bank of the State of Georgia and you will be held liable for the amount thereof, with interest, damages and charges." Signed in type only ("W.W. Gordon"), with handwritten portions presumably in Gordon's hurried hand. An interesting tidbit of southern Americana. .
