While most "Lakeside Classics" are reprints of rare Americana titles, this is the true first edition of Smith's text. Smith served with the 51st Regiment Illinois Volunteers from October 1861 to November 1865, and while he remained a private throughout he participated in an impressive and far-ranging number of important engagements.
