ICKES, Harold L. - The Secret Diary of Harold L. Ickes

Title: The Secret Diary of Harold L. Ickes
Description: New York, Simon & Schuster, 1954. Hardcover. Complete 3-volume set. 8vo. Quarter burgundy cloth (Vol. I) and quarter grey cloth (Vols. II-III) with gilt spine lettering and blue paper over boards. xi, 738pp; 759pp; 695pp. Very good. Tight and nice, the only flaw being specks on outer page edges of second volume; lacks dust jackets. Complete set of this trilogy, with Volume I covering "The First Thousand Days 1933–1936, Volume II covering " The Inside Struggle 1936–1939" and Volume II covering " The Lowering Clouds 1939–1941." Laid into each volume is an 8vo pamphlet specific to each volume (12pp, 12pp, 8pp respectively) containing "A Reader's Guide to People in The Secret Diary of Harold L. Ickes." The first volume is a later printing, while the second and third volumes are both first editions. This unique set was the personal copy of Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65) and hails from the library of his son, Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois. Tipped to front flyleaf if the first volume is a fine, heavy stock 3½" X 2" calling card bearing printed "The Secretary of the Interior" at center and miniscule "Autograph of" at top; near the card's bottom, Ickes signs large and bold in blue ink. In addition, laid in is an intriguing personal memento: An original gold foil matchbook, embossed "Harold Ickes" in black diagonally across the face of it. 1½" X 4" (matches removed; opens up to 4½" X 1½"). Undated, but likely of early 1950s vintage. Near fine. Manufactured by Universal Match Corp. of St. Louis, Missouri, this customized matchbook was likely a one-up produced for an entertainment bash of some sort at which one was produced for each celebrity guest in attendance. Most unusual and possibly unique. Ickes (1874-1952) was President Franklin D. Roosevelt's trusted Secretary of the Interior (1933-46), an ardent reformer who earned the nickname "Honest Harold"; he also headed the Public Works Administration (1933-39). .
