Author: THONSEN, Lester (editor) Title: Representative American Speeches: 1962-1963
Description: New York, The H.W. Wilson Company, 1963. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Burgundy buckram with black lettering. 190pp. Near fine. Text front endpaper. Volume 35, Number 4, in "The Reference Shelf" series that gathered a handful of important speeches and reprinted them in this annual compilation, divided into six categories (Bold Words and Decisive Action, Some Views on the Nation's Economy, Some Inquiries Into Persistent Themes, A New Departure in Communication, Introduction and Farewell). This is a contributor's copy -- that of Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), at this time U.S. representative to the U.N. His "Eulogy on Eleanor Roosevelt" (in the Introduction and Farewell section) runs from page 178 through 183 -- he was long a close friend of the former First Lady and humanitarian. Stevenson boldly pencils "Page 178" on the front flyleaf and a typed slip laid in reads "aes eulogy of mrs. r. / ack'd." He stands in good company -- other speeches in this volume come from John F. Kennedy, Nelson A. Rockefeller, Earl Warren and other notables. From the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois (1969-81). .
