GRAVEL, Mike - Citizen Power: A People's Platform

Title: Citizen Power: A People's Platform
Description: New York, Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1972. Hardcover. 8vo. Black cloth with silver spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. xv, 284pp. Near fine/very good. Jacket a touch edgeworn only. Handsome and tight first edition of this call to action whose rear jacket panel plugs his ambitious platform: "In this book Senator Mike Gravel advocates: A single tax -- no deductions, no loopholes / A citizen's wage -- dividends of an affluent society / Public financing of elections -- an end to the buying of politicians / Public watchdogs -- a built-in adversary system / National referendum -- citizen power to make law / A new work ethic -- democracy in the work place / An end to secrecy." This nice presentation copy bears on front flyleaf a large bookplate with U.S. seal at top and printed "Mike Gravel / United States Senator at lower right-- between which he boldly inscribes and signs in black fineline "Adlai / Best Wishes / Mike." Mike Gravel (1930-2021) was Alaska's fourth U.S. senator, serving as a Democrat from 1969 to 1981 and twice running as a dark horse presidential candidate. Recipient Adlai E. Stevenson III was an exact contemporary, born and died the same years, but also served as a Democratic senator for the exact same years -- from Illinois. A delightful copy. .
