SCHLESINGER, Arthur M, Jr. - The Vital Center: The Politics of Freedom

Title: The Vital Center: The Politics of Freedom
Description: Boston, Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. Hardcover. 8vo. Terra cotta cloth with brown/burgundy lettering. x, 274pp. Near fine. Lacks dust jacket. Attractive early printing of this study "report[ing] on the fundamental enterprise of re-examination and self-criticism which liberalism has undergone." A superb presentation copy, boldly inscribed and signed on front flyleaf "For Adlai E. Stevenson* / -- the embodiment of what / I was trying to say / with great affection and / respect / Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. / *who knows the difference between / the vital and the dead center" -- Schlesinger clearly felt that Stevenson truly shared and understood his firmly liberal leaning. Assuming Schlesinger penned this around 1949, it shows the esteem that carried over into Stevenson's 1952 and 1956 Democratic presidential campaigns, when Schlesinger acted as speechwriter and advisor to the candidate. Intriguingly, laid into this copy is an 8½" X 11" article (pp. 15-16) torn from the November 1949 issue of "The American Foreign Service Journal," possibly sent by Schlesinger to Stevenson (although handwriting of the unsigned pencilled inscription is indeterminate). On the upper margin of an article by R. Rufus Roberts titled "Diary of a Government Ghost," supposedly excerpts from an 1863 journal by a government minion who penned Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, a pencilled note reads: "Speaking of Lincoln! -- and speechwriting!! / Did you see this from the / American Foreign Service Journal?" At the article's close a tiny wacky smiley face has been pencilled. A bit edgeworn and showing folds, as if transmitted with this book (in which Stevenson appears once within the text). Interesting no matter who penned it, and apparently used by Stevenson as a bookmark. Schlesinger (1917-2007) was a prolific historian and intellectual who had a prominent role in the JFK administration. .
